Parent, Health Educator, Executive Director, 2020 Candidate for San Diego Unified School Board, District A

Get to know school board candidate, Sabrina Bazzo.

Sabrina Bazzo is a dedicated mom, wife and proud long-time resident of the Mira Mesa community. Both daughters, recently graduated, went to public school in Mira Mesa from K-12. She and her husband have been active volunteers from the classroom to the athletic field for the past 18 years. Sabrina began as a room mom in her daughter’s kindergarten class in 2002 at Sandburg Elementary. She later went on to serve as PTA President in addition to Math Night, Reading Night and Career Day Chairperson to name a few. Along the way she raised thousands of dollars at Sandburg’s annual Fall Festival by creating a silent and live auction and garnering sponsorship, all with the goal of providing proceeds for student enrichment. She also helped to boost membership and recruit many volunteers to participate in the various PTA events throughout the year. She then became PTSA President at Challenger Middle School, as well as coordinating the Reflections Art Program and working in the student store to raise funds for PTSA programs dedicated to support the student body.

At Mira Mesa High School Sabrina served as Mira Mesa High School Foundation President for 6 years, from 2012-2018. In addition, she was also the Committee Chair for the Annual “Taste of Mira Mesa” (TOMM) during this same time frame. Taste of Mira Mesa is a community wide fund raiser for K-12 Mira Mesa Schools and one of the largest of it’s kind in San Diego. When her youngest daughter graduated from MMHS in 2018 Sabrina stayed on the Foundation Board of Directors but transitioned roles to that of Community Liaison. She continues to annually participate on the scholarship committee to award funds to graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education. She was also President of the Parent Booster Organization from 2014-2018 helping to raise thousands of dollars for Class of 2018 senior year activities.

Over the years Sabrina has also served on Student Site Council and Student Governance Boards at the grade school, middle school and high school, responsible for working with teaching, support and administrative staff to make decisions regarding budget, student curriculum and general welfare of the schools.  She was on the principal hiring selection committee at both Challenger Middle School and Mira Mesa High School. Sabrina has also been an active volunteer, team parent and fundraiser for AYSO soccer as well as the high school soccer and swim teams. She volunteered and raised funds for MMHS Cheer during the time her daughter was actively on the team. The team went on to win first place in a nationwide competition in 2014. She was also an officially trained Girl Scout ‘Camping’ Mom for her youngest daughter’s troop for several years.

Sabrina has been active in her community as well. In 2018, prior to the mid-term election, she successfully registered over 150 high school students as new voters. Furthermore, she has been on the Mira Mesa Town Council Board for several years. Sabrina served as MMTC Newsletter Editor and participated on the Scholarship Committee awarding funds to graduating high school seniors who have shown leadership skills and volunteered in the community. In 2016 she was recognized by this organization for her many efforts as Mira Mesa Volunteer of the Year.

Sabrina earned a Master of Arts in Public Health (M.P.H.) from San Diego State University and has worked as a health educator in the community for 25 years.  She currently serves as a consultant with non-profit medical organizations including the San Diego Academy of Family Physicians. Their primary goal is to provide health and medical education for Family Medicine Physicians.

Sabrina’s hard work and dedication both as a volunteer as well as in her professional career reflects her sincere interest in the whole child approach to education in order to help young people further themselves and their communities.
